Spotlight – What Makes Us Roleplay? from Extra Credits

Here at SOTARP.org we love all things Roleplaying: in case you couldn’t guess. And of course we also love roleplaying in video games. Have you ever wondered by its harder to get into the roleplaying spirit in some games yet get lost in your character in others? Well the YouTube series Extra Credits recently posted a video on how games can encourage roleplay and some of the pitfalls along the way which may do the opposite.

If you have never seen the Extra Credits series and are interested to the act of making video games or looking deeper into their impact, I could not recommend it more. The insight they provide into gaming, along with a great presentation style, make for some great short form info-tainment. There is tons of subjects that cover all the deeper aspects of games and their effect on our life. Check out their channel for more information.

The blog “From Horror to Daily Life: Creative Writer and Academic” had an interesting article last year on Role Playing that I just stumbled upon. We will soon be some publishing some of our own articles on this subject, but I felt this article had a lot of insight and suggestions that were worthy to share as well. It focuses mostly on chat or forum based RP yet these principles still resonate across other mediums as well.

A Roleplayer’s Guide to Roleplaying, or “What I learnt from being countless other people.”

One Year of SotA, One Year of Community Spotlight

By Seon

One year of Shroud of the Avatar funding has passed and one less year until the game comes out. Throughout that time the game’s community has grown and developed satellite communities such as Forsaken Virtues, The Poets’ Circle, The College of Arms, SotAWiki, The MadHermit Gaming, Avatar Radio and Shroud of the Avatar Role Players Community. The result is a Community (with capital C) more tightly knit than the sweater my grandma had made for me when I was a kid!

My expectations for this year? To see Portalarium as well as the players expand even more their interaction with the satellite communities to build a solid support base for a solid game, and you know what? I think it will happen.
