RP Classes presented by Luka Melehan
Wondering what RP is all about? Curious on how to get started? Luka Melehan will be conducting an RP class at the Port Phoenix Academy this Friday May 1st. In this course, you can learn how to get accustomed to roleplaying in New Britannia and participate in future roleplay events.
Roleplaying is a subject that takes many forms. During the session Luka will go over some different styles before centering on the RP styles you will be most likely to find in Novia. There will also be ‘lab’ time to practice RP in various scenes.
For more information check our her thread on the official forums or look up the event on the Avatars Circle Community Events calendar!

Spotlight – What Makes Us Roleplay? from Extra Credits
Here at SOTARP.org we love all things Roleplaying: in case you couldn’t guess. And of course we also love roleplaying in video games. Have you ever wondered by its harder to get into the roleplaying spirit in some games yet get lost in your character in others? Well the YouTube series Extra Credits recently posted a video on how games can encourage roleplay and some of the pitfalls along the way which may do the opposite.
If you have never seen the Extra Credits series and are interested to the act of making video games or looking deeper into their impact, I could not recommend it more. The insight they provide into gaming, along with a great presentation style, make for some great short form info-tainment. There is tons of subjects that cover all the deeper aspects of games and their effect on our life. Check out their channel for more information.
RP Basics – Building Character
Written by Keira and edited for use on SOTARP.org
The are many things in a game that will help you determine things about your character. Abilities, skill, statistics and game lore will all have an impact on your character and how he/she/it may interrupt or react to things that happen in-game. You will need to keep in mind how your character acts, speaks, thinks and how they express their personality, quirks, strengths and weaknesses. Being consistent with your character in important so others will be able to playfully react to your character. If you wrote your character to be cool and aloof, then you wouldn’t want them being buddy-buddy with a complete stranger. You would need to find some other way, an IC way, for your character to get to know that other person.

Role Play (aka. rp; roleplay)
Taking on a part, much like you would in a play but inside a chat-room or chat system in a video game. You don’t have a script of lines to memorize nor a director telling you where to stand and what to do. In essence, you’ve stepped into another person’s shoes and you’re pretending to be that person/being/creature/whatever.
Article Spotlight: A Roleplayer’s Guide on From Horror to Daily Life
The blog “From Horror to Daily Life: Creative Writer and Academic” had an interesting article last year on Role Playing that I just stumbled upon. We will soon be some publishing some of our own articles on this subject, but I felt this article had a lot of insight and suggestions that were worthy to share as well. It focuses mostly on chat or forum based RP yet these principles still resonate across other mediums as well.
